Hello beach lovers!
With the warmer months approaching, we know a lot of you are relocating from California and having to face the reality of foregoing coastal (or near coastal) living. Moving from the sunny shores of California to the heart of Texas might have you wondering where you can catch some waves or relax on the sand. Dallas-Fort Worth might be a bit of a trek from the nearest natural beach, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of options. Let’s explore where you can soak up some sun and surf, even in the Lone Star State!
The Drive to the Coast
First things first, Texas does have beaches, and they’re worth the drive! The closest substantial beach options are on the Gulf Coast, about a 5-6 hour drive from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Port Aransas, affectionately known as "Port A," is a gem on Mustang Island known for its laid-back atmosphere and beautiful beaches. It's a great spot for fishing, bird watching, and of course, just lounging on the beach. Galveston is another popular choice, offering both bustling piers filled with family-friendly activities and quieter stretches where you can hear the seagulls and waves. Corpus Christi is another fantastic destination, where you can enjoy the Padre Island National Seashore – the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world.
For those of you who don't mind a longer drive or a quick flight, the sandy shores of Alabama and the emerald waters of the Florida Panhandle are about a 10-12 hour drive away. Destinations like Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida, are favorites among Texans looking for that classic beach experience.
Man-Made Marvels Closer to Home
Don’t want to spend all day in the car? No worries! Right here in Texas, you have some cool man-made options. Over in Waco, about an hour and a half south of Dallas, BSR Cable Park offers a unique surf experience. Their Surf Resort features a state-of-the-art wave pool where you can catch some seriously good waves, perfect for both beginners and experienced surfers.
Austin, about a three-hour drive from DFW, offers NLand Surf Park, another splendid spot for surfers to hone their skills. NLand creates waves for all experience levels, so whether you’re just starting out or you’re looking to challenge yourself, they’ve got you covered.
Lakeside Lounging
Closer to home, you can always turn to our local lakes for a day of relaxation or water sports. Lake Lewisville and Lake Grapevine offer lovely sandy beaches and are popular spots for swimming, boating, and catching some rays. They might not have the ocean's waves, but they’ve got plenty of sunshine and a great vibe.
So, even though you’re moving away from the familiar beaches of California, Texas has got you covered with both natural and innovative water experiences. Whether you’re up for a road trip or a fun day out at a local lake or wave pool, you’ll find plenty of places to keep your beach heart happy. Let's bring you home to a place where you're never too far from a little sand and surf!
